Kawaii is a Japanese cultural phenomenon of cuteness. By emphasizing cute, childlike innocence, charm and simplicity the Kawaii culture has really taken off since the 1970's. First starting in popularity in the 1970's with a style of writing that many teenage girls in Japan developed. With the popularity of Anime, Manga and brands like Hello Kitty, the Kawaii aesthetic took off around the world.

Kawaii is characterized by using soft or pastel colors, round shapes and features like large eyes and small mouths to look vulnerable. This cute and innocent look contrasted to the refined and beautiful traditional aesthetic in Japan.
